Urgent and Unscheduled Care Skills Course

An interactive online course designed to help GP registrars develop confidence in assessing and managing patients presenting with urgent problems in general practice and out-of-hours settings.

Through clinical scenarios, discussion and focused teaching, participants explore the challenges of urgent care: recognising serious illness, making decisions with limited information, conducting telephone consultations and knowing when to seek support or escalate care.

The course covers the COGPED out-of-hours competency themes alongside updates on clinical conditions encountered in urgent and unscheduled care.

Who is it for?

GP registrars at all stages of training, from ST1 to ST3. The course provides a foundation for trainees beginning their urgent care experience and an opportunity for more experienced registrars to consolidate their knowledge and clinical reasoning.

Course Includes:

• Urgent clinical scenarios: assessment and initial management of acute presentations, including anaphylaxis, with emphasis on recognising red flags and arranging appropriate escalation.
• Telephone consultations: gathering essential information, assessing urgency remotely and deciding when face-to-face assessment is needed.
• Safeguarding: recognising concerns involving children and vulnerable adults and considering appropriate action in an out-of-hours setting.
• Decision-making and uncertainty: balancing risk, recognising personal limitations and seeking timely advice.
• Communication and continuity: safety-netting, documentation and effective handover.
• Out-of-hours competencies: exploring the COGPED competency themes and relating learning to clinical experience and reflection.

Course Structure:

Delivered online through interactive teaching, scenario-based discussion and opportunities to ask questions. The emphasis is on applying knowledge to realistic situations encountered in primary care.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants should be better able to:

• Approach urgent presentations in a structured way.
• Recognise patients requiring urgent treatment or escalation.
• Conduct safer telephone assessments and provide clear safety-netting.
• Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns.
• Reflect on their learning needs in urgent and out-of-hours care.

Training Relevance:

The course supports learning relevant to urgent and unscheduled care during GP training. It complements supervised clinical experience; attendance alone does not demonstrate competence or replace local training requirements.
